They wander along, as alligators do, on the surface area of the water hesitating for colleges of fish to swim near them. If there are no fish, they could consume rats, turtles, ducks and also geese. While they say there is no record of a gar attacking an individual, I guess the question is, exactly how would a person ever live to tell the story? It appears the only redeeming top quality, from a preservationist biologist's point ofview, is that the gar consume silver carp. This is an invasive species that is multiplying. Eating silver carp to minimize those populations seems to be the gar's specialty. They are also being considered in the in the fight versus one more invasive varieties called the snakehead fish.
